Some doors should be left alone

Saraswati Iyengar could not contain her excitement . It was New Year’s eve and sometime before midnight she was going to solve one of mankind’s greatest mysteries .

She was a child prodigy in Mathematics and Science , but now in her middle age she had become fascinated with the occult and supernatural.

Just as our Universe with no beginning and no end  contains millions of planets with life forms superior and inferior to humans , so also there had to be many dimensions besides our own on earth .Even Einstein had acknowledged it .

Saraswati  loved reading H.P .Lovecraft the first writer of supernatural and horror tales who was also a contemporary of Edgar Allen Poe .But she was also fascinated by the current master and genius, Brian Lumley of U.K , who could  with different mathematical formulae   create doors and enter different dimension and worlds .

Who amongst us would not like to know what lies beyond !.That is why most of us are afraid of death .
Perhaps we are not meant to know .
Perhaps some doors are not meant to be opened .

Instead of mathematical numbers as Brian Lumley has  described , Saraswati concentrated on geometrical diagrams.

No circles , she  decided . She only used straight lines joined in angles , as squares , triangles , hexagons etc on a large drawing board ,creating a funnel of dozens of frames one receding from the other without a single shape being duplicated .
Tonight ,she would cut open the final square hoping to enter another dimension .

Sometime before midnight she dozed off . She was rudely awakened by a draft of chilling air as if someone was hitting her with ice cold water from a firehose . It was coming from a minute tear through the edge of the small square .
The icy air was hitting her in vibrations as the tear in the drawing board flapped back and forth like an unlatched door .
Scared as she was , she rushed to her drawing board and tore it up again and again until her heart calmed down . What had she done ? What had happened ? It was incomprehensible . She would think it out in the morning when her mind was clear .

She put out the light and shut her eyes . Instinctively she felt  she was not alone .She opened her eyes to check out the room . There was always  enough glow for her to see in the dark.

But something was amiss  . The window of her room  was not visible .From ceiling to floor there was blackness.....

At the same time the black mass had moved , occupying the right side of her room . It seemed to pulsate , like a giant glob changing shape .Suddenly in the middle of it like an eyelid just opened was a huge eye , the size of a football.
The expression was neither kind nor evil .

.Stark raving madness .
And it was slowly turning and focussing on Saraswati.
For a few seconds, horrified beyond fear,  she could not move . In an act of self preservation , her hand reached the switch by her bedside turning  her lamp on .

The eye immediately closed and the blackness slowly left her room like mist gliding out through the chink under her closed door .
It had to be a nightmare , she figured .Nevertheless she was going to keep her lamp on all night .
But as she peeked out of the window , that globular mass of darkness, like a small cloud could be seen moving out of her lawn .

Her neighbours had a big ferocious watch dog , an Alsatian named Vithu . who started barking at this entity .
A huge tongue of blackness reached out and engulfed the poor dog . He just disappeared .As if digesting the dog, the mass formed thousands of small black globs churning around , like  frothy soap suds and moved out of sight .
Before it moved away , the maddening eyeball  looked up at Saraswati . She almost fainted .

That week the most bizarre and unexplained events were taking place in her town .
First the stray dogs started disappearing .Then the beggars, dozens of them who slept out on the footpaths started  disappearing .
Good riddance said ..most of the townfolk .
Looks like the municipality finally is taking  some responsibility !

It was when their family members sleeping on terraces started disappearing that panic set in the city .
The authorities could not explain it . No motive , no robbery , no bodies .

Saraswati felt suicidal . She had opened the door to some dimension and allowed this creature to enter .
No one would believe her anyway And if that black frothy bubble mass was to disperse and multiply , the entire helpless population was in danger of extinction .

She had to send the entity back where it came from .She had noticed the blackness outside  her window most nights as if it was interested in her .
Only her blazing lights all night kept her safe .

She bought yards of cardboard and taped it against the wall., covering  up the entire  wall .She then feverishly started reconstructing her diagrams , all still fresh in her mind .
When she came to the final door, large enough for her to pass through , she made it a swivel door .

Saraswati knew that the creature would be outside her window that night .It always came home to roost , she thought to herself .
Sometime in the middle of the night , the blackness appeared outside her window .She immediately turned off her lights .She knew she had to offer herself as bait., the only way to attract the creature .

Outside the window , the insane eye looked straight at her and the mass entered the room.
Saraswati slowly backed towards the wall till she was at the edge of the door to the other dimension .
Her heart was fluttering in fear .

As the black mass with the open eye was almost upon her she pushed the cardboard door open .
The  awesome chill almost froze her to death .
As the entity sailed through the opening following her into its own world , Saraswati swivelled the door  reentering her own earthly dimension ‘
In split seconds , she tore out one side of the square on the card board destroying the door permanently .
Then sobbing continuously , she tore every piece of cardboard into shreds until the wall was bare .
She did not even notice her torn  fingernails .

Her mind was still numbed by the horror she had seen in those two seconds when she stepped into the other dimension .

It was a scene beyond imagination .
The blackness was total .But for a second , there appeared purple blue lightning bolts and the landscape was visible .
There were mountains in the distance and hills and rocks .
All structures were globular , in semicircles , ovals…. the lakes like huge black pancakes . They were all shifting and pulsating with thousands of specks which were the eyes of the creatures .
Then the darkness returned as the lightning stopped  by  then Saraswati was safe in her room .
She would get nightmares for a long time and the feeling of guilt would always stay with her .

Some doors are not meant to be opened .
